The Miami Marlins are one of the teams that had a disappointing 2025 season and are looking to strengthen their roster this offseason.
The Marlins were linked with veteran pitcher Michael King, who is coming off a shortened season with the San Diego Padres as a nerve injury limited his stint. However, hopes of signing the former New York Yankees pitcher are fading, per MLB broadcaster Kevin Barral.
While Miami is "highly unlikely" to sign King according to Barrel, the team is turning its attention to the bullpen. The MLB sportscaster reported that the Marlins are eyeing free agent relievers Devin Williams and Pete Fairbanks this offseason.
Williams is coming off a rollercoaster 2025 season with the Yankees, where he was often the subject of criticism from fans due to his tendency to blow saves in high-leverage situations.
Meanwhile, Fairbanks has been a steady bullpen arm for the Tampa Bay Rays for the last three seasons. In his role as a full-time closer for the Rays, Fairbanks has posted a 2.98 ERA and 3.31 FIP in 151 innings with 75 saves.
Marlins looking to extend crucial rotation piece amid Devin Williams,.Pete Fairbanks rumors
Although the Marlins are showing strong interest in Pete Fairbanks, the veteran closer is also attracting interest from back-to-back World Series winners, the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Last season's World Series runner-ups, the Toronto Blue Jays, are also reportedly interested in the closer. Amid rumors of a new addition to the pitching staff, the Marlins are in extension talks with promising starter Eury Perez.
The Marlins had reportedly discussed an extension during spring training earlier this year while Perez was rehabbing from a Tommy John surgery. He finished the season with a 4.25 ERA, 104 ERA+, 9.9 K/9 and 1.049 WHIP in 95 1/3 innings across 20 starts. He will be arbitration-eligible next but cannot walk into free agency until 2029.
