Retired MLB slugger Mike Cameron believes San Diego Padres infielder Manny Machado should utilize strategic rests for longevity. Cameron pointed out that age is a reality, and star players must balance pride and practicality to stay healthy and productive.

Cameron played 16 seasons in MLB, winning four Gold Glove Awards and earning an All-Star selection. He is now a special assistant coach of the Mariners. Meanwhile, Machado is the de facto leader of the Padres.

The 33-year-old third baseman earned his seventh All-Star selection in 2025, but he looked fatigued in the final stretches. MLB reporter Kyle Glaser highlighted this on Tuesday's episode of "Friars Territory" and asked Cameron, the co-host, for a solution.

"That fatigue is there partly because of Father Time and maybe some of the things he's already gone through that he's had to continue to rehab to make sure he stays on the field," Cameron said (Timestamp 14:07).

The Mariners special assignment coach then agreed with Glaser's suggestion that Machado should sit out games. Cameron said Machado should consider sitting out when the Padres have to play a day game immediately after a night game.

"Manny needs to understand he can't be stubborn," Cameron said. "One thing he can look at from looking back on the season, although he had a really good season minus those four or five weeks that you're talking about right now, he ended up having a really good season for the team."

Manny Machado joined the Padres in 2019 on a 10-year, $300 million free agent contract. He later signed an 11-year, $350 million extension in 2023 that will keep him on the Padres till the 2033 season.

Mike Cameron points out the mental vs physical battle for players like Manny Machado

In the same conversation on "Friars Territory," Mike Cameron said Manny Machado should reflect on why he ran out of steam. Cameron pointed out that the battle between mind and body is a reality for veteran players.

"Mentally, the guys that play 14, 15 years that post every day, mentally they're able to push themselves to do it," Cameron said (Timestamp: 15:12). "But sometimes the body just doesn't show up. And you need the both of them to connect at the same time and just [take] a day off here and there."

The Padres have made the postseason four out of seven times since Manny Machado's arrival. Their best record in this span was the 2022 NLCS loss to the Phillies. Last season, they lost the Wild Card series to the Chicago Cubs.
