New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza shared an update on Juan Soto's desire to remain on the field, paving the way for Kyle Schwarber rumors. Schwarber, who played for the Philadelphia Phillies over the last few seasons as a designated hitter, is a free agent, and Mets fans hope New York can be a landing spot for him.

On Monday, at the winter meetings, Mendoza said Soto likes to play defense and he won't entertain the thought of moving to the DH spot as of now.

"He takes pride being a good defender," Mendoza said. "He will continue to do so. If he's feeling good enough, he's going to be out there in right field."

Given that it primarily opens the slot for anyone seeking a DH role, fans think the free agent Phillies star will be the perfect man for the job.

"Kyle Schwarber is a Met," one fan commented.
"Schwarber will DH," one fan wrote.
"So does that open the door for Schwarber?" one fan asked.
"Go hard on Kyle Showrber so the problem gets solved," one fan wrote.

"Schwarber can DH," one fan added.
"Unbiased Mets Fan @TheMetsX · 2h Look I love Juan Soto, but if he wants to be out there he’s gotta be better. He’s awful out there," one fan called out Mets star for his defensive skills.

Mets strongly interested in Kyle Schwarber per report

Kyle Schwarber had a strong season in 2025, hitting 56 home runs. Given he plays only designated hitter, teams like the LA Dodgers and New York Yankees are considered out of his free agency. This leaves the Mets as the best landing spot aside from the Phillies.

According to the New York Post, the Mets are interested in acquiring Schwarber.

"Team executives have shown interest in Kyle Schwarber, according to industry sources, potentially giving the lineup an unrivaled 1-2 lefty punch along with Juan Soto," Mike Puma wrote.

If the Mets are successful in landing Kyle Schwarber, they will have Juan Soto and the DH hitting back-to-back. Francisco Lindor will also be at the top to provide switch-hitting. The Mets are also trying to re-sign Pete Alonso. If everything falls the Mets' way, they will have quite the lineup in 2026.
