Veteran New York Mets pitcher Kodai Senga has been put on the trading block by the team this offseason. However, the 32-year-old ace is reportedly looking to stay in the Queens.
Will Sammon of the Athletic reported that Senga has informed the Mets that he prefers to stay as he has two years left on his five-year, $75 million contract he signed in December 2022.
The Mets, valued at $3.2 billion by Forbes, are trying to revamp the roster after failing to make the postseason in a disappointing end to the 2025 season. The Mets have already traded veteran slugger Brandon Nimmo, who has been with the team since 2016, and are reportedly looking to trade Jeff McNeil.
Given the Mets' recent moves, it seems unlikely they will align with Senga's desire, especially with the veteran pitcher proving to be unreliable due to injuries in his three seasons with the team.
Senga started 29 games in 2023 and finished with a 12-7 record, leading to a second-place finish in the NL Rookie of the Year voting. The Japanese pitcher missed nearly the entire 2024 campaign due to shoulder and calf issues, making just one start.
In 2025, Senga was troubled by a hamstring injury, which saw him miss a month of action. The veteran Japanese starter was optioned to Triple-A after he posted a 5.90 ERA in nine starts following his return after the injury. He has made just 52 starts across three seasons for the Mets.
