Trent Grisham accepted a one-year, $22 million qualifying offer from the New York Yankees on Tuesday, sparking a wave of reactions from fans on social media.
Grisham recorded 34 home runs and an .811 OPS in 143 games last season. However, he was impacted by a hamstring injury he suffered in the middle of the season.
Fans shared their thoughts about Grisham re-signing. Many wondered how this could affect Cody Bellinger's free agency and the futures of top prospects Jasson Dominguez and Spencer Jones.
“What a joke,” an X user said. "I despise this regime. Spencer Jones is the future. He’s great and he’s ready. Why are the Yankees paying some scrub who had a lucky career year. He will be garbage this season. Mark my words."
“Terrible news. Really foolish move by Cashman,” another penned.
“Waste of money,” one more added.
“This is the iceberg hitting the Titanic level of bad,” another noted.
Others were more positive about Grisham's return.
“I don't get why people are upset about this lol it's just one year, we have a high-end 4th OF who provides injury coverage too. This doesn't affect us getting Belli or Tucker,” one noted.
“2nd highest OPS for CF, 3.5 WAR. 22mil for 1 year? I'll take it. Idk why people are complaining,” another said.
Brian Cashman on whether Trent Grisham will affect Yankees’ Cody Bellinger pursuit

Last week, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman noted that their pursuit of free agent Cody Bellinger won’t be affected regardless of Grisham’s decision.
“We’d be happy if (Grisham) accepted (the qualifying offer) and came back. If we get a call at some point that he accepts, our conversations with Scott Boras on Bellinger will continue, and we’ll see where that takes us.
“And if (Grisham) rejects, we’ll be talking to both Grisham and Bellinger regardless, and then we’ll continue keeping an eye on the guys we have from within.”
Apart from Grisham, pitcher Ryan Yarbrough agreed to a one-year deal worth $2.5 million to stay with the Yankees. With both back, the team’s expected payroll for the upcoming year is around $282.53M.
Cashman previously indicated that the Yankees' crossing their luxury tax payroll of $300M is not sustainable. Now, with a large amount of money tied up with Grisham and the team yet to lock in Bellinger, it is a tricky situation to navigate.
