The bright lights in the Bronx are not everyone's cup of tea, and former New York Yankees pitcher Sonny Gray, who signed for the Boston Red Sox last month, took shots at his former team.

Gray was traded to the Yankees by the Athletics in 2017 and had a frustrating one-year stint in pinstripes in 2017-18. Following the move to the Red Sox, Gray expressed his distaste for the Yankees.

"New York… I never wanted to go there in the first place,” he told Red Sox reporters. “It just wasn’t a good situation for me. It wasn’t a great setup for me and my family.”

Devin Williams and Juan Soto are two other MLB stars to move away from the Yankees over the last two seasons, a fact brought up by blogger Dan Clark on X.

However, fans pointed out that Soto didn't mock the Yankees after he signed a $765 million contract with the New York Mets last offseason.

"No, these guys are soft losers. And Soto had nothing bad to say about the Yankees."

"Soto liked his time with the Yankees. Only problem was that they didn’t treat his family like royalty."

"Soto had a great time on the Yankees and made it clear he wanted to stay…. Yankees just pulled out. He was always going to let the Yankees match whatever deal the Mets offered. The yanks just decided it was too much."

"Don’t put Juan Soto in a list with Williams and Gray. Soto left because he got the largest contract in sports history and Gray and Williams left because they sucked."

"Soto never said he didn’t like his time on the Yankees and Gray was awful and booed by fans! Williams was also awful."

Although Soto finished with career-best numbers after a stellar second half of the 2025 season, the All-Star outfielder failed to make the postseason with the Mets.

Sonny Gray admitted the Yankees experience made him a better player

Sonny Gray waived his no-trade clause to facilitate a move to the Yankees' arch rivals. Following the move, the All-Star pitcher said the experience of playing in the Bronx made him better.

"I’ve been a better baseball player, husband, everything from having that experience and going through that,” Gray said.

It will be interesting to see the reception Gray gets when he suits up against his former team.
