Kyle Tucker and Cody Bellinger are the most prized free agents on the market this offseason. Tucker was traded to the Chicago Cubs in December 2024 after winning the 2022 World Series with the Houston Astros. Meanwhile, Bellinger opted out of his contract with the New York Yankees to become a free agent for the second straight offseason.

While Tucker appears to be a better player than Bellinger in terms of production, an MLB podcaster shared his thoughts on the comparison while keeping the Yankees' interest for both of them in mind. According to Tyler Vieux, it will be smart for the Yankees to re-sign Bellinger instead of offering Tucker a $450-500 million deal.

"I think they'll lean on Belli, I don’t know if I could talk myself into Tucker being worth $450–500 million," Vieux said. "He's a year younger than Belli, and Belli had a 5.1 WAR season last year. Tucker’s never had more than a 5.5 -- like, he’s not out of the stratosphere. He’s very good. He’s very good. It’s just, there are fiscally smart decisions and then there’s not."

Yankees are actively evaluating both Kyle Tucker and Cody Bellinger

In Kyle Tucker, the Yankees get elite production, and in Cody Bellinger, the team receives chemistry and utility options.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has reportedly spoken with the representatives of both players.

"We'd love to have Bellinger back. I talked to (his agent) Scott Boras yesterday about Belli and other free agents of his," he said. "I talked to Casey Close today about his free agents, he's got Kyle Tucker amongst others. That's the nature of the beast in the winter. You play it out, talk to different teams. I had several conversations with teams today. Try to find a way to either make a trade or add a free agent and keep going."

Re-signing Bellinger could be a priority if the Yankees think his production and offerings on the field beat that of Tucker, who comes with high upside, is a year younger, and can put on an MVP showing when healthy.
