Former San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt announced his shocking retirement after the NL West team's postseason exit on Oct. 11 after the Wild Card series loss against the Chicago Cubs.
However, the veteran manager's hiatus didn't last long as Shildt is reportedly joining the Baltimore Orioles organization as an upper-level minor league instruction coordinator. Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Banner reported the news on X.
"The Orioles are hiring former Padres manager Mike Shildt as their upper-level minor league coordinator of instruction, source confirms. And Samuel Vefas is the lower-level coordinator. @masnRoch had both of these first."
Fans reacted to Shildt's return to an MLB franchise six weeks after announcing his retirement.
"Hope he can manage the stress. 🤷♂️," one fan said.
"Well, that does seem to be his strength. And, I'm guessing that Craig Stammen will *not* be leaning on him now, as that would be a conflict of interest since he now works for another org."
"That is a smart move. maybe or next GM."
Shildt announced his retirement, walking away with two years remaining on his Padres contract. He finished with a 183-141 record in his two seasons with the NL West team, guiding them to back-to-back postseason appearances for only the second time in franchise history.
Mike Shildt walked away from Padres' job due to his inability to deal with stress
Although it was a relatively successful season for the 57-year-old, Mike Shildt revealed that he was struggling to deal with the stress.
“One of the reasons I am going to leave is a frustration with the stress and the inability to please everybody,” Shildt said. “… I made a decision to go home because of this. I’m tired of dealing with it.”
It'll be interesting to see how Shildt deals with his new role in Baltimore, especially with the Orioles boasting one of the best farm systems in the league.
