Having already signed Sonny Gray to bolster their pitching staff, the Boston Red Sox are also expected to make significant improvements to their offense this winter. So far, they have been linked to free agents Alex Bregman, Pete Alonso and Kyle Schwarber.

There are many reasons why re-signing Bregman makes a lot of sense for Boston, with the third baseman having already established himself as a fan favorite at Fenway Park in 2025.

According to insider Mark Feinsand, however, Alonso and Schwarber's superior ability to hit for power may lead to Boston having second thoughts.

"The Red Sox and (Alex) Bregman were a good fit," Feinsand said. "Bregman had some health issues for part of the year but played well when he was on the field. By all accounts, he was a great presence in the clubhouse, and (he) was the reason why they traded Rafael Devers the way they did.

"So it wouldn't surprise me if there was a reunion. At the same time, the Red Sox have also shown a big interest in adding a big power bat, Bregman has the ability to hit the ball out of the park, but he's not Pete Alonso or Kyle Schwarber."

Insider explains why trying to sign Pete Alonso or Kyle Schwarber should be the "next big priority" for the Red Sox

Having hit a total of 186 home runs as a team, the Red Sox ranked 15th out of 30 big league franchises in 2025.

As they aim to improve on that, insider Jen McCaffrey was of the opinion that signing a player like Pete Alonso or Kyle Schwarber may be the best course of action. She explained her thoughts on Wednesday's episode of "Hot Stove".

"(Red Sox CBO) Craig Breslow, at the GM meetings, was pretty definitive about the top priorities being adding to the rotation, (signing) a starter to slot right behind (Garrett) Crochet, and adding a power bat in the middle of the lineup," McCaffrey said. "To us, that says we're going hard after (Pete) Alonso, (Kyle) Schwarber in the mix as well. Maybe one of the Japanese free-agent hitters as well.

"You need home run potential. They had injuries at the end of the season with Roman Anthony and Wilyer Abreu, but Trevor Story was their highest home run hitting total with 25 last year. They need more than that and they know that. I think that's going to be the next big priority for them."

Pete Alonso and Kyle Schwarber finished the regular season with 38 and 56 home runs respectively, while Alex Bregman finished with 18.
