The Boston Red Sox and the Toronto Blue Jays are two of the most active teams this offseason and both teams have reportedly shown interest in acquiring Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star Ketel Marte.

While the Blue Jays and Red Sox are interested in a trade for Marte, MLB insider Jon Morosi reported that Boston is considered ahead in the race for the All-Star slugger due to the depth of their rotation.

According to reports, the Diamondbacks are open to trading Marte for starting pitchers due to the team's need for arms in the rotation.

"The Red Sox are viewed as stronger candidates to land Ketel Marte than their AL East rival Blue Jays, because Boston has greater depth of MLB-ready starting pitchers," Morosi wrote this week.

Marte hit 25+ home runs for a third consecutive season and earned his second Silver Slugger award after slashing 283/.376/.517 with 28 home runs and 72 RBIs in 126 games last season.

Boston has reportedly talked to Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager, Houston Astros third baseman Isaac Paredes and St. Luis Cardinals All-Star Brendan Donovan in hopes of strengthening the infield.

Craig Breslow hints at "uncomfortable" trades for Boston this offseason.

Ketel Marte is coming off a second consecutive All-Star season with the Diamondbacks and has five years and $91 million remaining on his contract, which he signed with Arizona in April.

Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow hinted at the difficulty over a potential trade for Marte.

"There are some "hitters of note who are trade candidates," Breslow said. “But it’s really difficult to pry other team’s best players away from them. And in doing so, you have to give up talent yourself. These types of trades should be uncomfortable for both sides.

"And so we’re engaged in those conversations. It’s impossible to know today what will get executed, what will reach the finish line, and what won’t. But going to trades and free agency are both good ways to improve our roster.”

While the Red Sox are linked with a move for the Diamondbacks star, the AL East franchise is expected to prioritize a deal for All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman, who became a free agent after spending the 2025 season in Boston.
