MLB analyst Jake Savicki believes that Dylan Cease, reportedly acquired by the Blue Jays, per MLB.com, is an electric pitcher but volatile. Savicki acknowledged that Cease can produce dominant outings, but also feels occasional command lapses affect him.
Cease reportedly signed a seven-year, $210 million deal with the Blue Jays. He played the last two seasons with the San Diego Padres. The 29-year-old righty played with the Chicago White Sox before that.
Despite making his MLB debut in 2019, Cease has not yet earned an All-Star selection. As such, many analysts and fans have criticized the Blue Jays for handing out a huge deal. However, analyst Jake Savicki has a differing take, which he shared on Friday's episode of the "Hold My Ball" podcast.
"So you get a guy like Cease whose numbers are pretty damn good," Savicki said (Timestamp: 2:34). "In those last five seasons where he's thrown over 30 starts every year, he's also had over 200 strikeouts every single one of those years: 226, 227, 214, 224, 215. This dude's K per nine is 10.9 on his career."
The analyst also highlighted the cons of Cease, comparing him to a Dodgers pitcher with two Cy Young Award victories.
"His problem is obviously a little control," said Savicki. "I'm going to give him, like, (Blake) Snell vibes, right? He might dominate your team through six innings. You might get two hits, and he might K up 10. He also might walk four or five and have a pitch count of 106 through six innings, which is not ideal."
Nevertheless, the analyst is confident the Blue Jays will benefit from their long-term investment in Cease. He pointed out that Cease's disappointing outings mostly occur during a single inning, and the Blue Jays will have the personnel to stop that from happening.
MLB analyst hails Blue Jays' Dylan Cease
In the same "Hold My Ball" podcast, analyst Jake Savicki claimed Dylan Cease was the biggest free agent starting pitcher available in the market. For context, Framber Valdez, Ranger Suarez, Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, among others, are yet to sign with a team.
"I truly believe this is going to be one of the better signings that we see this offseason and in the near future, maybe next year or two," Savicki said (Timestamp: 5:09). "I just see him being a guy that fits in Toronto, fits with the team. I think his personality would fit anywhere."
The analyst also said that Dylan Cease will be in the Cy Young discussion in the upcoming years and could win it. Cease has been in the Cy Young discussion twice in his career. He came second behind Justin Verlander in 2022 and was fourth in 2024.
