New York Yankees star Gerrit Cole and Amy Cole were proud invitees to the Lou Gehrig Legacy Gala. The starter who didn't feature this season due to Tommy John surgery provided a brief update about his rehab process.Gerrit Cole looked dapper in his grey suit paired with a brown tie and chequered shirt. His wife, Amy, wore an ochre satin dress. The pitcher was the proud recipient of the Lou Gehrig Sports Award, given to sports athletes who exude the same resilience as the Baseball Hall of Famer.Cole has been the ace of the Yankees' rotation since signing with the club in the 2019-20 offseason. In five seasons, he has a 59-28 record with a 3.12 ERA and 19.8 bWAR. However, New York got the unfortunate news this year, when, after two games in Spring Training, he had to be removed from the roster to undergo Tommy John.Cole stated on Tuesday at the Gala that his rehab is "going great" so far. As reported by the New York Post, the 35-year-old confirmed he won't be present for the Opening Day roster, but will be expected to join the team soon.“They mentioned that Opening Day is probably out of the picture and that seems to make the most sense at this point,” Cole said. “But when, afterwards, I’m not exactly sure. Hopefully as soon as possible.”The timeline for a Tommy John rehab process is usually around 10-12 months. Cole started throwing pitches in August on a flat surface. Last week, he was seen taking a bullpen session at Yankee Stadium. Bullpen sessions are expected to be the course of rehab for the flamethrower till the holiday break in December.Gerrit Cole weighs in on Cody Bellinger's free agencyGerrit Cole made his feelings known about Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger choosing to opt out of his contract to head into free agency. Cole watched from the sidelines as Bellinger took on responsibility at the ballclub, becoming the second most important at-bat in the lineup after Aaron Judge. “Cody’s outstanding,” Cole said. “I mean in my career, I’d never come across another player like Cody. I mean, two other players come to mind. I think of Josh Harrison and I think of Sean Rodriguez back when I was on the Pirates. "Both players that I thought could play at least three major league positions at above-average defense. Cody fits that bill, and then also has a career OPS of .850, which is just in another league. So fantastic player all around, fantastic clubhouse guy and great family man.”It remains to be seen if the Yankees are able to offer a contract that would attract Bellinger or they will be looking at other big free agents in the market.
