The New York Yankees are in the market to sign Cody Bellinger or Kyle Tucker as their mega outfield free agent signings. However, the team could consider a different direction with a possible trade for Fernando Tatis Jr. from the San Diego Padres, who are set to go through a transition spell as their franchise is getting sold.

MLB insider Michael Kay, on the eponymous show's latest episode on Friday, stated that the Yankees could pivot towards Tatis. He addressed the concerns regarding his Performance Enhancing Drug (PED) problems, but believed that bringing him to the Bronx would work out for the team.

"This type of player would play huge in New York,"Kay said. "He'd be unbelievable. He'd be a huge star. I know he's had his PED problems. And if he gets banged again for a PED problem, you're kind of out of contract, aren't you?

"Now, you can say, "Well, we're giving up a lot of people, and we're one bad test away from maybe being out of contract." You can take that chance because he's excelled since being banged on the PED charge."

Tatis was suspended in August 2022 for 80 games because he tested positive for an anabolic steroid. He was moved from shortstop to right field the following season and has excelled, winning two Gold Gloves and further being adjudged as the National League Platinum Glove award winner for 2025.

His stellar defense has led to a 5.9 bWAR this past season, his best since his first All-Star campaign in 2021. Tatis batted at .268 with 25 home runs and 71 RBIs in the regular season.

Getting the 26-year-old in the corner outfield position could mean moving Aaron Judge to center field. Tatis is currently signed to a 14-year $340 million contract by the Padres, which runs through to the 2034 season.

Kay further pushed for the Yankees to sign Tatis over Cody Bellinger as he noted his irregular performances. The 30-year-old has had ups and downs in the past five years.

"If I'm the Yankees and I see the bidding for Cody Bellinger gets over $30 million, I might have to tap out," Kay added. "Cody's 30 years old. And let's not forget, he's had great years and he's had really bad years.

"The Dodgers, after he won an MVP for them, non-tendered him. The Cubs, after one good year and then one "eh" year, they traded him to the Yankees for Cody Poteet. Cody Poteet. And they ate $5 million of his contract."

Padres ownership unwilling to let go of Fernando Tatis Jr. for now

The Padres, controlled by the Seidler family, announced ten days ago that the team would be up for sale. However, USA Today's MLB insider Bob Nightengale reported in his column on November 13 that the ownership is not looking to trade Tatis.

"The San Diego Padres, who announced Thursday they are up for sale, won’t trade All-Star right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. now, but go ahead and check back with their new ownership a year from now." Nightengale wrote on Thursday.

This is not the first time insiders have linked New York to the 26-year-old slugger. In 2022, after Xander Bogaerts was brought in to play as the Padres' shortstop, Tatis was seen as a probable Bomber, which was quickly turned away by San Diego.
