Eugenio Suarez enjoyed a strong 2025 season. Batting .228 with 49 home runs and 118 RBIs, Suarez played a key role in helping the Seattle Mariners win the AL West and make it to the NLCS, earning his second All-Star selection in the process.

Now a free agent, several teams looking for a reliable fixture at the hot corner have been linked with the Venezuelan. As insider Francys Romero reported via X on Sunday, it appears the Chicago Cubs are also in the mix.

"The Cubs continue to explore the third-base market in free agency, and Eugenio Suárez is one of the names to watch in the coming days, according to multiple sources," Romero posted.

For most of 2025, youngster Matt Shaw played third base for the Cubs. While Shaw possesses great defensive ability, the Cubs could use improved offensive production, especially with Kyle Tucker set to sign elsewhere in free agency.

In that regard, Suarez is arguably one of the best options currently on the market.

Cubs insider explains why Eugenio Suarez could be a much better fit than alternative options

Along with Eugenio Suarez, the Cubs are also reportedly keeping an eye on Alex Bregman. According to insider Evan Altman of Real Cubs Insider, however, the Venezuelan might prove to be a much better fit for the team.

"A player I think makes far more sense than Bregman is Eugenio Suárez," Altman wrote on Sunday. "Though Suárez is about three years older than Bregman, his projected contract is roughly one-third of what his counterpart could command for what may only be two years.
"Unlike Bregman, Suárez has been able to maintain his power stroke into his 30s and should be able to do so over the course of his next deal. He could push Shaw into a utility role in 2026, plus he could DH a bit with Seiya Suzuki patrolling right field against tough lefties. Given what figures to be a relatively limited budget, saving several million in AAV while getting a great deal more power and avoiding the potential of an age-related production cliff seems like a better option."

Per reports, Eugenio Suarez is projected to secure a short-term contract in the range of $30-40 million this winter, while Alex Bregman is looking for a longer-term deal, in the range of $180 million.
