Sonny Gray took the baseball world by storm on Tuesday when he opened up to reporters about his decision to join the Boston Red Sox via trade from the St. Louis Cardinals and be part of the rivalry with the New York Yankees. The starter further claimed that he was unsatisfied during his one and a half season spell with the New York Yankees in 2017-18.

Gray was traded to the Yankees, valued at $8.2 billion by Forbes, by the Athletics at the trade deadline in 2017. His comments fueled speculation that players do not want to sign with the Yankees unless traded by their clubs.

MLB broadcaster and social media influencer Nicky The Good openly called out the Yankees for failing to get back reliever Devin Williams and outfielder Juan Soto after their lone season spells with the team.

"Devin Williams did not choose to go to the Yankees," he wrote. "He had no choice. Juan Soto did not choose to go to the Yankees. He had no choice.
"Devin Williams and Juan Soto did not choose to stay with the Yankees. They both had a choice. Let the broke boys in the Bronx make their jokes. Nobody wants to play for them."

Devin Williams was traded to the Yankees by the Minnesota Twins during the last offseason. The 31-year-old reliever struggled in the initial months with a 9.00 ERA in March-April and a 4.22 ERA in May.

He finished the season with a 4.79 ERA but had a strong 2.68 Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP). Despite signalling his desire to continue in the Bronx, he reportedly has signed a three-year $51 million contract with the New York Mets.

Williams will join four-time All-Star Juan Soto, who signed a fifteen-year $765 million contract with the Mets after spending the 2024 campaign with their crosstown rivals. He was traded from the San Diego Padres to the Bombers during his final year of arbitration, leading them to their World Series.

Sonny Gray makes feelings known about his time with the Yankees

During his chat with the media on Tuesday, Gray maintained that he didn't feel his best putting on the Yankees pinstripes.

"New York just wasn't a good situation for me, wasn't a great setup for me and my family," Gray said. "I never wanted to go there in the first place. Then I was there, and it didn't really work for who I am."

During the two seasons, he managed a 15-16 record with a 4.51 ERA with a 1.2 bWAR. After he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds the following season, he immediately bounced back with an 11-8, 2.87 ERA season where he recorded a 6.2 bWAR.
