"Could go back to the Dodgers" - MLB analyst drops blunt take on Pete Alonso & Cody Bellinger's NYC future

New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso and New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger are some of the most notable free agents this offseason. Both had great seasons in 2025 and are expected to sign long-term deals.

Amid this, MLB insider Jon Heyman dropped a brutal take on the suitable landing spots for both free agents.

Jon Heyman subtly mentions Dodgers as potential landing spot for Cody Bellinger

Cody Bellinger started his career with the Dodgers and even won an MVP over there. Heyman cites his versatility and ability to play across the field while sharing that he will be able to drive a lot of interest this offseason.

"Bellinger, to me, right now is in a great position because he's now had three very good years in a row," Heyman said. "Maybe not the MVP year, but he performed outstandingly in New York. He had a higher WAR.
"The Phillies are a possibility. Could he go back to the Dodgers? I think people over there still like him. It was a situation where he had those two down years because of the injury. I think he's in an outstanding position as well."

Still, Heyman is placing his bets on the Yankees to re-sign him. He also picked the Mets as the potential landing spot since they also want to sign a first baseman and an outfielder, and Bellinger fits the bill perfectly. He also compared Bellinger to another notable free agent outfielder, Kyle Tucker.

"He is more versatile than Tucker, right? Because we know he can play center," Heyman said. "I think Tucker can probably play center, too, but Bellinger has already proven himself in center. He's outstanding at first base. He's amazing at the corners. He's in an outstanding position, I think, for the first time."

Jon Heyman not ready to give up on Mets-Pete Alonso reunion

Though the Mets couldn't qualify for the postseason, they would still like to re-sign Pete Alonso, even though they were in a similar position in last offseason's free agency as well. Alonso has proven his worth to the Mets in 2025 and that's why Jon Heyman believes that there's a good chance he returns to Queens.

"Well, it's hard to imagine Pete Alonso in a different uniform," Heyman said. "That's true. People move if they're a free agent. This is the second time with the Mets. We'll see if Steve Cohen can save him once again, as he did last year for the Mets.
"They do have that run-prevention issue that they're looking at. I'm not guaranteeing he's going to the Mets. I think he's going to have a much better market without the qualifying offer."

But even if it doesn't happen, Heyman cited Alonso's outstanding offensive year as a reason to believe he will have several takers. The insider added:

"He also had an outstanding offensive year, much better this year than last year. So, I mean, I could see, I've heard Houston, which is a little bit surprising to me, but obviously Alonso has other potentials with Boston and many others."

Alonso and Bellinger didn't have their way last offseason, having to sign compromise deals. But this year, they have the numbers to negotiate from a position of strength.
