Bautista played 15 seasons in the big leagues with eight different teams. The Dominican slugger achieved his best success with the Toronto Blue Jays, earning six All-Star selections and three Silver Slugger Awards. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential power hitters of his era.

In a conversation with performance expert Dr. Kristen Holmes on Thursday, Bautista reflected on the cultural foundation that continues to produce top-tier Dominican players.

"Well, some of that stuff may not necessarily apply to me as an individual," Jose Bautista said (Timestamp from 42:35). "But it creates an ecosystem and an environment that I was able to be in and benefit from and take advantage of."
"So for a lot of the Dominican baseball players, baseball's a way out, and you just try to become a professional baseball player so you can provide for your family," he added.

Bautista pointed out that the situation is not the same for everybody, but the competitive environment raises the tide for everybody. Even though he was not in the same situation, competing against others living tough lives helped him to elevate his game.

In the interview with Dr. Katie Holmes, Bautista also explained how life in the Dominican Republic helped him achieve greatness in MLB. The ex-MLB slugger believes that it has something to do with the fiery, high-energy characteristics of the Caribbean people.

"We're high energy, and we wear our emotions on our sleeve," Jose Bautista said (Timestamp from 41:28). "We wouldn't know any different. We love living life that way and we enjoy it. You can tell by our music and by the way we interact with other humans. And baseball is a huge part of that."

Bautista said the situation is particularly true for the young boys in the DR community, as everybody wants their kid to play baseball. As such, everybody wants to be good at baseball. The Blue Jays legend pointed out that the Dominicans see it as a pride thing, similar to Canadians and hockey.

"Yeah, it was just how I grew up," he added. "I didn't know any different, and you put in all your effort into being a good baseball player growing up. And the guys that you could tell, like oh there's something there, you're good at it, you just get more serious about it. So I loved it."

Jose Bautista's experience in the DR certainly helped him achieve greatness. For his exceptional performances for the Blue Jays, the franchise inducted him into their Level of Excellence in August 2023.
