Former MLB outfielder Mike Cameron urges Manny Machado to understand the business side of baseball amid the San Diego Padres' turbulent offseason. The Padres' ownership is looking for a sale, and Cameron knows roster cuts and payroll trimming are to be expected.
Mike Cameron played 16 seasons in MLB. He earned an All-Star selection in 2001 with the Mariners. The retired slugger appeared on Monday's episode of "Friar Territory," where insider Mary Caswell asked him what Manny Machado would be thinking as starting pitcher Nick Pivetta is in the trade rumor mills.
"From a business standpoint, I would think Manny has to understand that right now....you have to understand you're going to have to nip and tuck, considering the team has already put out there's a possibility of for sales for the team and everything," Cameron said (Timestamp: 22:35).
The retired slugger knows Machado would like to have all the best players remain with the team. However, Cameron pointed out that the Padres are trying to minimize payroll while also acquiring young talent with a potential Nick Pivetta trade.
"But as of right now, it's tough," Cameron added. "You know, when you're in those middle age, 30s, and you're trying to still compete for a championship and you have to possibly get rid of one of your best guyS, or it could happen in a couple of years or a year or two."
The Seidler family began exploring a potential sale last month. Internal disagreements and long-term financial valuation shaped their decision. Still, the organization has insisted it will field a competitive team for the 2026 season.
However, the Padres have already lost Dylan Cease in free agency. Cease signed a $210 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. Moreover, other star players, Luis Arraez, Robert Suarez and Michael King, are also expected to sign elsewhere this offseason.
Mike Cameron shares thoughts on Manny Machado's load management
Manny Machado only missed three regular-season games last year. While his desire to play every day is commendable, the third baseman had tough outings during the latter part of the season.
Padres insider Kyle Glaser highlighted this factor on a November episode of "Friar Territory" and asked podcast guest Mike Cameron to share his thoughts.
"That fatigue is there partly because of Father Time and maybe some of the things he's already gone through that he's had to continue to rehab to make sure he stays on the field," Cameron said (Timestamp 14:07).
Cameron also said Manny Machado shouldn't stubbornly decide to play when rest is needed. He acknowledged that older players are mentally fit to play, but that doesn't mean their bodies will hold up.
