The New York Mets and Texas Rangers started the offseason with a blockbuster trade between Brandon Nimmo and Marcus Semien on Monday. During a recent Zoom call, Semien discussed what it was like being traded to NY and being part of a key role in the clubhouse.

The Mets fans widely loved Nimmo since his debut with the team following his 8-year, $162 million deal. Nevertheless, Semien is excited to be part of the Mets, valued at $3.2 billion (per Forbes), and get to know the fanbase

"I want to play until they tell me to go home. At this point in my career, it feels extremely good to have a team that believes in me, sees what I do well, wants to help me. Offensively, I think that I still have a lot to offer.”

“I'm disappointed in the way that I performed offensively last year. Had a good start in 2024, and I think that just having conversations with Jeff Albert and I'm looking forward to talking to Troy Snitker about what I need to do to be that MVP-caliber bat in this lineup. That's my goal."

Marcus Semien suffered a broken left foot and a sprain from a foul ball, which forced the shortstop to miss the final five weeks of the season. Despite his injury, he slashed .230/.305/.364 with 15 HRs and 62 RBIs in 127 games. He also won the Gold Glove Award this season.

The trade news came three weeks after he and his wife, Tarah, welcomed their fifth child. He received a call from his agent, Scott Boras, on Friday, but the trade couldn’t be confirmed until Brandon Nimmo waived his no-trade clause on Sunday.

After his trade was confirmed, Marcus Semien got on a call with former Mets pitcher Max Scherzer. He wanted to know what it’s like playing in NY, and even family-wise, as the veteran is the father of four.

“I just asked him a lot more about family stuff more than baseball stuff, because I know he has four kids of his own, and just kind of bounced some things off of him, about how we’re going to do things moving forward," Semien said.
“In terms of baseball itself, I couldn’t be more excited to play in a large market, play in front of a fan base that brings energy every single night, because that brings the best out of me.”

Semien said he’ll let his “game do the talking” and will prove himself to be a key presence in the locker room. He further labeled Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto as Hall of Famers, and added he’s excited to join leaders like them.
