The Tampa Bay Rays designated Christopher Morel for assignment on Tuesday. The roster moves come along with the addition of three prospects to their 40-man roster, apart from several pitching trades and trimming the surplus from the outfield.

With the Rays, Morel's offensive performance has declined, as he batted .219 to go along with 11 home runs and 33 RBIs in 105 games this past season. As such, the move doesn't surprise anyone.

Fans also reacted to the latest move by the Rays.

"2 years overdue," one fan commented.
"Spoiler alert to the Cubs fans he DFA’d him bc he sucks," another fan added.
"I remember Cubs fans saying Morel for Bichette, one for one, would be an overpay by Chicago," another fan added.

Meanwhile, some Cubs fans want the team to sign him.

"Wouldn’t be expensive, Cubs should look into bringing him back," one fan noted.
"Bring him back @cubs," one fan added.
"Cubs should bring him back to be a willi Castro type player. Morel can literally play every position," one fan wrote.
"COME BACK TO CHICAGO," one fan suggested.

What's next for Christopher Morel after being DFA'd?

Since the Rays have DFA'd Christopher Morel, they now have seven days to trade him, release him, or, if he clears waivers, outright him to the minors. The Rays also shared the reason behind the removal of Morel from the 40-man roster.

“Really just struggled to find consistency throughout his game. Through last year and then this year, just couldn’t access the power on a consistent enough basis to reach his potential,” president of baseball operations Erik Neander said.
“Just got to a point where the playing time and the opportunity started to tighten up as last year went on and … [we] didn’t feel like the opportunity was going to be there looking ahead to next year. We just couldn’t establish the consistency that we were hoping would be there. It happens, but he gave us everything he had, and we appreciate that.”

Morel is arbitration-eligible. Other teams may pick him up off waivers if they like his profile and think they can fix what’s missing. Several fans want that team to be the Cubs, with whom Morel had the best time of his career.
