Cody Bellinger has opted out of his New York Yankees contract to become a free agent before the 2026 season. This means the outfielder will forego his guaranteed $25 million salary for the 2026 season in favor of a better deal in free agency.
The outfielder slashed .272/.334/.480 with 89 runs, 25 doubles, five triples, 29 homers and 98 RBIs in 152 games this year. He is bound to get offers from several teams this offseason.
3 potential landing spots for Cody Bellinger
#1 Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies are losing several outfielders to free agency this offseason, including Kyle Schwarber, Max Kepler and Harrison Bader. As a result, the Phillies will need to fill the void in both outfield depth and offensive production.
Bellinger's versatility to play multiple positions, alongside his durability and power, make the Phillies a desirable landing spot.
However, the Phillies would first need to re-sign their own players, and they might only go looking for Bellinger if they are unable to bring any of them back.
#2 San Francisco Giants
The Giants struggled in the outfield this season, with Jung Hoo Lee and Heliot Ramos posting negative defensive run values. The Giants almost made the postseason in 2025 and if they want to continue to keep up with NL West rivals, the Dodgers and the Padres, they need someone of Bellinger's calibre.
The only thing that could prove to be a hindrance is Bellinger's desire and the money the Giants can offer.
#3 New York Mets
ESPN's David Schoenfield believes the Mets could be the perfect fit for Cody Bellinger. It wouldn't be a surprise, considering even Juan Soto played with the Yankees before signing with the Mets in free agency.
Bellinger can play centerfield for the Mets, who deployed the 33-year-old infielder Jeff McNeil at the position at times. Moreover, if Pete Alonso doesn't re-sign, there's an opening at first base as well.
Bellinger is a great defensive fielder with good numbers at the plate. He is a former MVP who has just turned 30, so for at least the next 2-3 years, he is expected to perform well.
