AEW has a negative reputation for being a company that has too many championships. A WWE veteran has just addressed this and called out the company for introducing yet another belt.
The National Championship was recently added to the list of belts, and Ricochet was crowned as the inaugural champion after winning the Casino Gauntlet match at Full Gear last month. This belt is said to be one that will be defended in promotions from around the world. This is a duty that the current champion must uphold.
During a recent edition of Busted Open After Dark, Tommy Dreamer questioned the new belt. He discussed how he had doubts about its credibility and whether the belt could be elevated given the number of other titles on the roster. He wished that this could be set apart from the others and be meaningful in its own right.
"Really, it's just about the credibility of the title...I don't know if titles...when you have so many titles, if they mean something or is that champion that helps elevate it? Does it matter who's the champion? I feel who wins it, yes, it does. How it's defended...every title should have meaning." [H/T WrestlingInc.]

Ricochet is set to defend the AEW National Championship in another match outside AEW
Since becoming the champion, Ricochet has defended his National Championship on two occasions. He defended this for the first time last week at ROH Final Battle against Dalton Castle. This was the first time in history that an AEW title was defended on Ring of Honor.
A day later, he put his title on the line against Ace Austin on Collision. The former WWE Superstar was successful on both accounts, proving that he was indeed worthy to be champion. He is set to have his third defense this coming weekend as he'll be appearing at RevPro Uprising at the Vale Arena in Cardiff. He'll be putting his National Championship against Nino Bryant.
"🚨 THIS SUNDAY 📅 14th December 📍 Vale Arena, Cardiff UPRISING 2025 AEW National Championship RICOCHET VS NINO BRYANT," says the promotion's official post.
In the few weeks that the belt has been officially introduced, it has been defended on two different promotions. It remains to be seen whether they will continue to be consistent and allow stars from all over the world to have a chance to compete for the belt.
