There has been a lot of confusion around the lineage of a major AEW championship. The promotion has explained the technicalities of the situation, but it still seems like one with a lot to unravel.

Similar to last year's Continental Classic, this year's tournament will have the Continental Championship as the main prize for the winner. But with Kazuchika Okada merging this and the International Championship, there has been confusion regarding what this means for this year's tournament.

The AEW commentary team mentioned earlier tonight that The Rainmaker only has the International Title around his waist, as he had to surrender the Continental Title as part of the tournament.

They then explained that the Unified Championship is active only if the titleholder holds both the International and Continental titles. Should Okada end up losing the tournament, this condition would no longer apply to him.

He would end up losing the Continental and Unified titles in one swoop and only remain as the AEW International Champion. This scenario would mean that the titles are no longer merged, and everything would go back to the way it was, where two different champions are present.

If Kazuchika Okada wins the Continental Classic for the second time, he will leave 2025 as the Unified Champion, as he still holds the International and Continental titles.

This is a confusing scenario and one that leaves more to be desired. An easier scenario would be to have the Unified Championship itself on the line. There would be no more worry about the two title lineages, as this would permanently be merged into one major belt.

Kazuchika Okada's reign as the AEW Unified Champion is in jeopardy as he has already taken a loss to Kyle Fletcher during his Continental Classic opening match.
