Jericho has been absent from AEW television programming since April 2025. Amidst his prolonged absence, there has been constant speculation regarding his potential WWE return, with his current AEW contract also nearing expiration at the end of the year. Moreover, the Ayatollah of Rock' n' Rolla has fueled the rumors himself by dropping various references hinting at his major comeback to the Stamford-based promotion.

He did again at the expense of John Cena’s recent triumph. Taking to his Instagram stories, Chris Jericho reshared a collage of Cena’s first and last WWE appearances in his hometown of Boston, Massachusetts.

Cena wrestled Jericho on the July 4, 2002, edition of SmackDown as a young and hungry wrestler who wanted to make a name for himself, which was his first night in Boston. In his last night in the city as an in-ring performer, taking place on the November 10 edition of Monday Night RAW, The Franchise player shared the ring with the rising star of today, Dominik Mysterio, leading to an impromptu match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship.

John Cena became a WWE Grand Slam Champion before his retirement

John Cena had a spectacular one-on-one showdown against Dominik Mysterio with the workhorse title at stake on the aforementioned edition of RAW. In the final moments of the bout, Cena caught Mysterio right after he delivered a Frog Splash and picked him up as he was lying on the mat to deliver a thunderous Attitude Adjustment and score the pinfall to become the new champion.

With that remarkable victory, Cena finally got the missing piece in the puzzle and completed his Grand Slam. The 17-time WWE Champion earned the prestigious accolade just a month before he will wrestle the winner of ‘The Last Time is Now’ tournament on December 13, at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event.
