AEW and WWE veteran Jim Ross has shed light on whether the Stamford-based promotion had reached out to him in any way to pay tribute to John Cena ahead of his retirement match on Saturday. The "Greatest of All Time" will be battling a formidable opponent in his final bout in the form of Gunther. Besides having served as one of WWE's most iconic broadcast personalities, Good Ol' JR also played several key backstage roles during his time in the sports entertainment juggernaut, including those relating to developing and signing talent. One such star he had signed, John Cena, proceeded to become one of the biggest names in the industry, and his decorated career is set to reach its end at the upcoming edition of Saturday Night's Main Event against Gunther. Tributes have been pouring in for the Cenation leader ahead of his retirement from his fans as well as his peers, both from WWE and from AEW. All Elite Wrestling announcer Jim Ross was asked during a recent edition of the Grilling JR podcast if he had been approached by WWE to be involved in John Cena's retirement tour in any capacity. JR responded that he had not, since he works for AEW, albeit clarifying that he would have been open to the idea. Ross further claimed that Tony Khan may have given him his blessing if the Triple H-led company had actually asked him, stating: “No. Are you kidding me? Why would they do that? It’s wrestling. I don't work for them, but I would have been happy to do it. I'm sure that if they had requested something that Tony Khan would have blessed it because he's a wrestling fan. And if he and the powers that be thought that I could help out a little bit, I'd love to be a part of it simply because John Cena was one of my guys.” [H/T - @WrestlePurists on X]WrestlePurists @WrestlePuristsLINKJim Ross was asked if WWE contacted him for any kind of a John Cena tribute:“No. Are you kidding me? AEW's World Champion seemingly paid tribute to John Cena on Dynamite This Wednesday on Dynamite: Winter is Coming, the reigning AEW Men's World Champion Samoa Joe defended his title against Eddie Kingston in the main event of the program. Both veterans put on a gruelling and hard-hitting contest, with The Samoan Submission Machine ultimately retaining after choking The Mad King out with his signature hold. The Coquina Clutch was not the only submission Joe had employed during the bout, however. Notably, at one point, The Destroyer had Kingston tied up in an STF. He even performed a brief salute at the camera after locking in the hold, leading viewers to note that Joe was likely paying tribute to John Cena ahead of his retirement. The Samoan Submission Specialist and his AEW World Title are currently being eyed by two of the company's top stars, Swerve Strickland and former champion Hangman Adam Page.
