An AEW star recently talked about his contract and shed light on his new role. Ortiz was part of a top tag team, Proud & Powerful, with Mike Santana. Things haven't been good for the All Elite star since their separation. The Funky Monkey was injured in January 2024 and was out for more than a year. He hasn't been seen in the squared circle despite getting medically cleared.

The 34-year-old star had real-life issues with former tag team partner Santana, as the latter wanted to be a singles star. Therefore, Mike was released by AEW and is now the current TNA World Champion. Meanwhile, Ortiz recently provided a major update on his whereabouts and his status in the company.

While speaking with Wombreezy, Ortiz said that his contract will expire within a year. He is currently producing and coaching matches backstage, which he has been enjoying.

“As of right now, I have about a year left with the company. Give or take on this current contract. I would love to stay there. I love working at AEW. I’ve been coaching and doing producing, which is learning a different skill and will give you longevity (...) Even if I stay on purely to do coaching and producing, and I can still wrestle, I’m happy. If they keep me, I would stay," he said. [H/T - WrestlePurist's X]

Ortiz says AEW didn't separate him and Mike Santana

After AEW refused to give Santana a singles push, he left the company in early 2024. The duo had multiple bouts after getting separated.

On The Shining Wizards podcast, the 34-year-old star said that Mike didn't want to work as a tag team anymore, so the promotion separated them.

"Unfortunately, it wasn’t the company’s call to split us. Me and Santana just couldn’t get it together personally and he was just very adamant about not working with me anymore," he said.

It remains to be seen what will be next for Ortiz.
