The world of professional wrestling has been dominated by the Sports Entertainment Juggernaut, WWE, since its top competitor, WCW, closed its doors in 2001. However, a new threat emerged in 2019, when Tony Khan and some top wrestlers established a major wrestling promotion, All Elite Wrestling (commonly known as AEW).

Since their inception, WWE and AEW have been signing each other's superstars as they become available, strengthening their respective rosters in the process. In doing so, the Stamford-based promotion seemingly distances itself from the stars who depart for AEW by avoiding their mentions and even removing their contributions to the company.

Here are three instances when World Wrestling Entertainment erased superstars from its history after they joined rival promotion All Elite Wrestling.

#3. Mercedes Mone

A particular instance in 2024 saw WWE distancing itself from one of their pioneering female stars who paved the way for the Women's Revolution, Mercedes Mone, formely known as Sasha Banks. The former Legit Boss and current WWE superstar Naomi walked out of the company before an episode of RAW in May 2022. While Mone chose to jump ship to AEW in March 2024 and went on to become a marquee name in professional wrestling, Naomi returned to her previous promotion as a surprise entrant in the Royal Rumble a few months prior. The company seemingly removed all mentions of Mone relating to Naomi, such as their past tag team footage, commentary references, and video packages, including them winning the WWE Women's Tag Team Championships.

#2. Claudio Castagnoli

Claudio Castagnoli came to prominence in professional wrestling for his tenure in WWE as Cesaro. The Swiss Superman was considered one of the strongest superstars on the roster and had immense potential to reach the top of the mountain. However, lackluster programs and poor storyline bookings kept Castagnoli out of the main event picture for the majority of his run. He left the promotion in 2022 after an 11-year stint and joined All Elite Wrestling. The former United States Champion has become a regular fixture on their television; however, he was mentioned by John Cena a few months ago. He namedropped Castagnoli, alongside Matt Cardona and Nic Nemeth, on an episode of SmackDown in 2025 while recreating a parody of CM Punk's pipebomb. In November, WWE released a compilation of Cena mentioning Cardona and Nemeth with their respective returns in 'The Last Time is Now' tournament. The company very evidently left out Castagnoli's mention and erased him from the storyline in the historic John Cena farewell tour.

#1. Jon Moxley

Jon Moxley broke into the wrestling business as part of the dominant faction, The Shield, alongside Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins. While the duo remains top stars in World Wrestling Entertainment, Moxley left the promotion in 2019 to join AEW and became one of its biggest draws. In January 2025, the Stamford-based promotion released a video on their YouTube channel, titled 'WWE RAW Marathon,' and clearly cropped out Moxley from the thumbnail they used of The Shield. Moreover, the Purveyor of Violence has hardly been mentioned on live television and is seemingly being erased from major parts of their history.
